Talking with someone who has a 2016 Subaru WRX (CVT) and she’s having some periodic over-revving after morning starts. She gets up, starts her car, let’s it warm a bit on cold mornings, drives through the neighborhood and then when accelerating around 35mph it revs to 6000 and holds. It takes about a half dozen times of this happening before she can drove normal and it doesn’t happen all the time.

Subaru couldn’t replicate the one time they had it overnight and it throws no codes.

Thoughts?

Also, yes...CVT...

Edit: Update with her post from comments below.

I’m definitely not in any different sport mode. There was a recall last year for cracks in the vent, but they said it wasn’t there. I’ll keep reading what everyone says. I’m going back in a few days to drive it while there’s a service guy In the passenger seat so he can see what’s happening.

That’s what she gets for buying a CVT WRX.

*Flamesuit on.

It revs itself up to 6k rpm, or she revs it to 6k and it won’t go any further?

Why do I remember this being a thing? Someone is going to chime in but I specifically recall something with the new WRX/STI about Rev hang. It’s no stranger to other shifting oddities

Is she using any of the Sport or Sport# (sport sharp) modes? Subaru CVTs hold the engine at different rev levels based on the drive mode, it’s probably some kind of undocumented error in the transmission’s software. Maybe try switching modes if the 6k rev hang happens?

Sorry to say it, but that transmission is garbage. I've had my hands inside it and the company I used to work for made components for it. The calibration isn't good and the WRX cvt is time bomb.

She just drives and at 30-35mph it’s almost redlining, won’t “shift” so she’s stuck at 6k doing 35mph. Let’s off, back and no progress.

I guess it’s like if we just left a manual in second and was like “ugh can’t go faster."

Good thought. Not using any of the modes to start her day but I’m with you on the undocumented piece. I’ll suggest essentially cycling the modes.

Hmmm...I don’t see anything yet in the thread for CVT but that’s interesting. It’s apparently not jerky and only a recent development after almost 6 months of driving.

I’ll keep reading. Thanks!

It is? People have been driving 2014+ Forester XTs for years now, not many complaints on the forum.

I am not a fan of mine until I hit S or S#

replace elastic bands and computers with 6 speeds and throttle. (i know wicked helpful) I miss my WRX. I’ll trade if she wants.

She should get a dash cam and get video of it happening and maybe try a different dealership

Rev hang has only been in the manuals and has been around for many years. Have it in my 2013.

If that doesn’t work email/call your regional Subaru representative or Subaru (of Canada?) head office.

The dealer probably cannot authorize work without reproducing it, but upper management can.

Take it to a subaru dealer when it’s acting up. Or until it gets worse. Can’t just throw parts at it. May want to leave the veh. with them for a while and authorize a tech/service manager to drive the veh. while having a diagnosis computer hooked up.

Zac!! I test drove it today with a service dude in the passenger seat, and it did it! So I left it with them so they can figure it out. I'll make sure to post what the problem turns out being :)

Not so much that it’s broken, but that the problem happened while a tech was in the car. Hope they get it sorted for you.
